I realize that Sid is not normally supported. However, by accident or design previous versions of VMWare Workstation did support Sid (most of the time). From work done by Andro_b and others it appears that there is a problem with a script file in vmware tools.
The problem appears to be the contents of the linux kernel version: 3.9-1-amd64. The perl scripts for the vmware tools config expect a further sublevel in the kernel version, such as 3.9.0-1 and so on, and so they fail.
That said, Ubuntu is supposed to be supported, and in fact the last time that I tried a fresh install of Ubuntu it does in fact initially install tools, but only up to the point of it needing a kernel security update then it too rolls over when an attempt is made to update vmware tools. Andro_b reports that there is a similar problem in the Debian Jessie release.
The Debian stable release version is only 3.4 and so does not have this script problem
